Setting Tile On Painted Wall

A painted wall can be a suitable backing for mounting a backsplash but a few things must be kept in mind.

Or prime and paint the entire wall room before starting with your tile project. Remove the tile and prepare the wall according to the corresponding instructions above or tile over the existing tile. Wall preparation is an important step when you in install tile on a painted wall. Adding a backsplash to a painted wall can also help cover damaged drywall or tile work.

Natural stone tiles on the other hand need an acrylic latex paint formulated for interior masonry or stucco 20 to 35 per gallon. Start by removing any molding switch plates outlet covers and other hardware attached to the area being tiled. To do so make sure all of the tiles are intact and secure. Let the wall dry thoroughly.

Line up the tile edges with the vertical and horizontal marks on the wall to ensure that they re level and plum. Sand the surface of the tile with 100 grit sandpaper. Don t start it at the floor. Instead bring it up to about 3 4 of the height of your tiles.

Paint over the tile with a bonding primer. If existing tiles are beyond repair remove the tile and install a piece of wallboard in its place. Wipe the tile down to clean it and remove any sanding dust. Lightly sand the paint.

Repair any loose or cracked tiles. So if you re dealing with four inch tiles your batten board would start three inches off the floor. Set the first tile next to where the vertical and horizontal lines meet on the wall. Scrape away any loose or peeling paint or wallpaper.

All of these paints come in a full spectrum of sheens ranging. The gritty surface you create with sanding allows the tile adhesive to stick better on the wall keeping the tile in position. A batten board is nothing more than a 1 x4 or 1 x2 board screwed directly into the wall horizontally. You don t necessarily have to remove the paint before applying the tile adhesive depending on the type of paint and wall surface.
